Former Marine J.T. Ready campaigned for various elected offices. He lost his bid for Sheriff of Pinal County, and for a seat on the Arizona House of Representatives. He co-founded two armed vigilante groups, one called the “Minuteman Civil Defense Corps” and another called “U.S. Border Guard” (not to be confused with the actual U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, a federal law enforcement agency). He organized other civilians to carry guns and patrol the border to intimidate illegal aliens. Following an argument at home, he shot and killed his girlfriend, her daughter, the daughter’s boyfriend, and their 15-month-old baby. He then committed suicide. Law enforcement found several guns on the property, as well as “two dozen military ordnance/40 millimeter grenades.”
